II’m Shannon Dodd — a reading specialist, parent educator, school consultant, speaker, author, and most importantly, a mom.
For nearly 30 years, I’ve helped children learn, grow, and thrive. I’ve worked with thousands of students, partnered with schools and districts, trained teachers, supported parents, and spent decades studying how children learn.
But some of the most important lessons I’ve learned did not come from a classroom.
They came from motherhood.
Fifteen years ago, my son was diagnosed with an inoperable skull base tumor. In an instant, everything changed. I became a mother trying to understand the most complex and miraculous thing I had ever encountered: the human brain.
I wanted to know how it develops, heals, learns, and adapts.
That deeply personal journey led me further into neuroscience, child development, learning science, and the reading brain. And what I discovered changed the way I teach reading, coach teachers, support parents, and view motherhood.
Because reading is not built in isolation.
Confidence is not built in isolation.
Resilience is not built in isolation.
Everything is connected — the conversations we have with children, the relationships we build, the routines we create, and the way we respond when learning feels hard.
That is why I created Literacy Simplified.
My work is rooted in one simple belief: When adults understand how children learn, support becomes clearer, calmer, and more intentional.
Today, I help parents understand reading development so they can stop guessing and support their children with confidence.
I help schools and educators translate the science of reading and the science of learning into practical support for real classrooms, real families, and real children.
And through my book, Becoming: 30 Days to Being a More Present, Peaceful, and Purposeful Mom, I help moms trade pressure for presence and remember that motherhood is not about perfection — it is about becoming.
Whether I’m speaking to parents, supporting schools, or encouraging moms, my goal is always the same:
To make what feels overwhelming feel understandable.
To help adults focus on what actually matters.
To replace confusion with clarity.
Connection over perfection.
Progress over pressure.
Understanding over overwhelm.
Children do not need perfect adults. They need present, informed, steady ones.
Welcome. I’m so glad you’re here.
I help parents understand the reading brain so they can stop guessing, know what matters, and support their children at home with more confidence and less pressure.
I support schools through parent literacy nights, reading-brain professional development, and practical literacy support that helps families and educators move in the same direction.
Through my bestselling book, Becoming, I help moms trade pressure for presence and grow into more peaceful, purposeful, and grounded versions of themselves.

"As a former teacher, I can't recommend this program enough! With my background, I know how critical early literacy is, and this program delivers. It's engaging, interactive and offers age appropriate skill building activities. Shannon has created experiences and activities that boost vocabulary, phonemic awareness, and love for reading. If you're looking for a way to give your littles a head start while, this program is a must!"
– Jennifer H.

"As a mom of three (1,3,7) I took a chance on this program but I am so glad I did! I wish I had known about Shannon when my 7 year old was little! I think it would have saved him from struggling now. I just didn't know that the toddler and preschool years were when I needed to start. PS. My littles are already showing growth in their language and development."
– Shelby J.

"This program is a game-changer for families. Her process is incredibly thorough yet easy for parents to follow, making it doable even with a busy schedule. It’s exactly the kind of practical, supportive approach we needed to help our child grow in reading with confidence!"
